I consider myself to be someone pretty au fait with sun protection. Fair skinned and light-eyed, I take it seriously: SPF50 on my face everyday, whatever the weather. This ritual has been made easier for me over the years, with more formula and texture developments than ever before. I enjoy knowing that I can go about my day and be protected from sun damage, preserving my skin health and keeping me looking younger for longer.
The thing is, one application of SPF doesn’t last all day; it needs to be reapplied. That’s easy when you’re lazing at the beach, but rather less practical in daily life. It's where my latest find has come in particularly handy. The Garnier Ambre Solaire Over Makeup Super UV SPF50 Mist, £12, has been a handbag essential for not only me, but also our Group Beauty Director, Eve Cameron. The product describes itself as "over makeup", but I use this micro-fine SPF spray on the days where I'm not wearing any makeup, too.
For an SPF50, this is a mist that feels completely invisible on the skin. I'm happy to report that its featherlight texture is one of its biggest appeals: it sits on the skin beautifully and plays well with makeup too. I find many other SPF mists sting my eyes, but not this. I spritz liberally in a figure of eight motion across my face, as well as my neck and tops of ears. When I'm not wearing a sunhat, I often forget about my scalp (it's particularly painful when burnt). I mist this all over my scalp and hairline, and, pleasingly, it leaves not an ounce of greasy residue.
Another reviewer of ours is prone to pigmentation. Carrying this in her bag, and spritzing whenever she finds herself in the sunshine later in the day, has been giving her a nice peace of mind knowing she's applying an additional layer of protection.
As brilliant as this £12 mist is, it's worth noting that it's not advisable to rely on this solely for your sun protection. It's designed to be supplementary only, used for top-ups. Yes, it's SPF50, but it's difficult to see how much mist you're applying to your face and to reach every single area. Use your normal SPF in the morning (consultant dermatologist Dr. Anjali Mahto recommends one teaspoon for your face and neck, as a rule of thumb) and carry this with you for additional reassurance.
